Target Kennels overlook the Borders town of Hawick. It was established in 2005 by Craig Dawson and now boasts one of the largest and best equipped greyhound kennels in the country.
Facilities include, 5 double kennels for brood bitches, 4 doubles for saplings and 7 doubles in a separate enclosure for racers. In addition there are 2 specially adapted kennels for use as whelping pens, which feature infrared heaters. The kennels are centrally heated with an abundance of natural light. The kennels have 10 brood bitches, 4/5 racers andaround 50 pups from 6 weeks to 12 months old. We find homes for all retired racers, brood bitches and any young dogs that do not make it to the track. Attached to the kennel block there are 2 large covered and sheltered paddocks to accommodate pups 5-10 weeks old, and to let the mothering pups exercise. The kennels also include and exercise room with with walking machines, Jacuzzi and injury treatment room. Adjacent to the kennels there are 9 large paddocks with sleeping quarters for the pups. Each has access to a large grassed 4 acre field which allows the pups as much freedom and exercise as required. For the last two years the kennels have been geared to breeding and rearing of pups, with a limited time given over to racing. However, since trainer Craig Dawson was granted his licence in February 2010, more time has been devoted to developing a strong racing team. In July 2010 Target Classic won the Williamhill.com Classic over 450 metres at Sunderland. This is the second-most valuable prize in Greyhound Racing worth £25,000 to the winner. The kennel has 10 brood bitches. 4/5 racers and around 50 pups from 6 weeks to 12 months old. We find homes for all retired racers, brood bitches and any young dogs that do not make it to the track. |
